How does AI help a local business get found on Google?

The search journey has already changed. In 2026, 47% of US adults used AI to find a local business in the past month. 28% tried a new local business in the past 6 months because AI recommended it. That is the new front door. If the machine answers and you are not in that answer, you are invisible before the customer reaches Google. But Google is far from dead. More than 93% of AI users still check before acting: 62% go straight to Google, 58% visit the business website, 52% open the sources the AI cited. AI gets you discovered. Google gets you trusted. So the boring basics matter more than ever. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Keep name, address, phone and hours accurate everywhere. Collect fresh reviews and answer them. Google says complete, accurate information and strong reviews lift local ranking. AI can take the grunt work: draft the review replies, clean up listings, flag missing information, summarize feedback, spot the questions people keep asking. Then add your own voice. That is where the owner wins. The hours you no longer spend on listings and replies go back to the customer, the counter, the marketing and the next location. SEO got you found on Google. Generative engine optimization (GEO) gets you found and cited by AI. My forecast: by 2035, the traditional search results page loses 1 in 3 searches where somebody is close to buying. Google does not disappear. The journey changes before Google gets the customer.
