Farming is becoming a connected machine. AI is the brain. Drones and satellites are the eyes. Sensors are the nerves. Robots are the hands.
Why now: farmers face labor shortages, expensive inputs, water pressure, volatile weather and brutal margins. Technology only wins when it produces more food with less water, chemicals, fuel, labor and land.
The 2026 tape: 60% of large farms run AI software by the end of this year. Farm robots head for $139 billion by 2035. Indoor farming heads for $149 billion by 2034. Smart irrigation passes $4 billion by 2030. John Deere paid $305 million for Blue River to put AI on the tractor.
The stack: AI decides. Drones inspect. Satellites map. Sensors measure. Smart irrigation waters. Robots spray, weed, milk and harvest. Genomics improves crops. The farm starts acting like one intelligent system.
The money vs tape: agrifoodtech funding exploded to $51.7 billion in 2021, then crashed to $16 billion in 2024. Hype got punished. Farmers do not buy PowerPoints. They buy yield, savings and return on investment.
The tape: in 2016 I put drones and exponential technology before 180+ JEM-id clients in horticulture. Since then I took AgTech stages in Tanzania and Kenya. What looked futuristic then is becoming infrastructure now.
My call: by 2030 the leading farms run as connected AI systems. AgTech helps unlock more than $500 billion in economic value, but only technologies that improve yield, water efficiency and farmer margins survive.
The warning: farming cannot become another platform economy where farmers own the land while somebody else owns the data, software and decisions. Farmers need to own the brain of their farm.
The mission I choose: Tech for Good. Social innovation should help us produce more food with less water, less waste and fewer chemicals, while protecting the natural systems that feed us, from farmland to oceans.
