For 30 years, quantum computing was 5 years away. That was the joke. The joke just ended. Quantum is not a faster computer, it is a lockpick in a lab coat. I am naming 2030 while McKinsey and Deloitte hide inside a decade-wide range. I forecast two moments. In 2030, quantum crosses from lab to leverage: the first fault-tolerant machines arrive and re-encryption becomes law. By 2035, quantum creates $1 trillion in value, with McKinsey's high end at $2.7 trillion. The encryption break, "Q-Day," lands between 2030 and 2033 on the aggressive estimates. The receipts are stacking. Google's cost to break RSA-2048 fell 20-fold in six years. The NSA set a 2027 deadline for quantum-safe national security systems, with full migration by 2035. NIST bans old encryption by 2035; the EU wants critical infrastructure quantum-safe by 2030. And between 25 and 35 percent of all Bitcoin sits in exposed addresses. The danger is real: adversaries are harvesting encrypted data now to crack it later. Encrypt like it is already too late, because for everything you sent before today, it is.
