Is my money safe if my bank gets hacked?

Not necessarily. But a bank hack does not automatically mean customers lose their deposits. Bangladesh Bank lost $81 million from its account at the New York Fed. In Brazil in 2025, hackers diverted institutional funds. In November 2026, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa confirmed attackers accessed its own account through a supplier. Customer assets were unaffected. Deposit insurance generally protects eligible deposits if a bank fails: €100,000 per depositor per bank in the EU; $250,000 per depositor per insured bank, per ownership category in the US. Unauthorized transactions may have separate legal protections. Recovering money you willingly send to scammers can be harder. Protect your logins. Question urgent transfers. Never share your codes.
