First, be clear what I mean by fast food, because words matter. I do not mean speedy delivery, I do not mean robot kitchens, and I do not mean your local Asian kitchen, street food, or a fresh bowl of pho: much of Asia eats faster AND healthier than the West.
I mean the industrial chains: McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, and their clones on every continent. Cheap, greasy, dirty food: burgers dripping fat, fried chicken, nuggets, fries, and buckets of sugar drinks, engineered to be craved, not to feed you, and priced so low that saying no feels expensive. The problem is not speed. The problem is what is in the bag.
I forecast that greasy empire grows to $1.2 trillion by 2030, at 4.9% a year, more restaurants, more countries, more ads aimed at kids, the same cheap product sold everywhere, day and night.
How? Look at the food. McDonald's sells 2.5 billion burgers a year, 75 every second, 13,000+ cows per day, and owns not 1 of them: the animals live invisible in industrial feedlots, and McDonald's has confirmed a single patty can contain meat from 100 or more different cattle. Your burger is not from a cow, it is from 100 anonymous ones, blended in a factory. No farm, no farmer, no face.
And the rest is chemistry, printed on their own ingredient lists: a nugget carries over 30 ingredients, starches, phosphates, lab-built flavors, and sugar hiding in the nuggets, the buns, the sauces, even the fries. 200 years ago people ate a couple of pounds of sugar a year, today around 60 pounds. Sugar is a poison at that dose, and ultra-processed food is its delivery system.
The cheapest calories hit the poorest hardest, so here is my fight: solve poverty, so people can afford real food again, and protect the farmers who grow it, now being regulated off their land, because a world without farmers eats from the lab by definition.
Now the hard numbers, the reason this card exists. Obesity rose from 2 billion people in 2020 to 2.5 billion in 2025, the number I called, and it landed. Continue like this and I forecast the world passes 3 billion overweight or obese by 2030, more than 1 in 3 humans on earth, while the industry books its $1.2 trillion.
