LIVE COMMERCE 2030
The call, in full
Live commerce is shopping inside video: the host sells, the audience asks, checkout sits in the stream. Taobao Live launched in 2016. Today the business is around $1 trillion, dominated by China.
China runs $700B+ through live commerce, nearly 1 in 3 online dollars. Singles Day 2025 did $238B in 5 weeks; America's whole online November did $111B. On the last true 24-hour reading, 11 November 2020, China sold $50B in 1 day; Cyber Monday 2025, America's biggest online day ever, did $14B.
TikTok Shop hit $64B GMV in 2025, up 94%, including $15B in the US. Southeast Asia already buys 1 in 5 online dollars through video.
But the West is different. Murder by numbers: East and South Asia count 4.7 billion people, the US and EU together fewer than 800 million. TikTok Shop's US live share fell from 26% to 18% in 1 year. The winner is not the 6-hour livestream. It is the AI host, short video, personalization and 1-tap checkout.
Regulation will slow the hype. The CCP put KOLs and non-certified experts on a leash: no license, no selling medicine, law, finance or education. China ordered Viya to pay about $210M in taxes, penalties and fees. Since February 1, 2026, China's AI commerce hosts must be continuously identified as AI. The operator remains liable.
Some market forecasts run toward $4T. Mine does not.
My prediction: $3T by 2030, live plus shoppable short video. China sells 3 in 5 dollars. The West buys through AI hosts, not armies of influencers.
Commerce gets faster. So does the bullshit. If the AI host invents the claim, the brand owns the liability.
